Come on! Think of Miandad hitting that six off Sharma. If he could do that, you can do this.

About This Quote

In the 1997 India vs Pakistan match, with India five down and facing a mountain of trouble coming into the final over, the great batsman Mohammad Azharuddin said, “If he could do that, you can do this.” The reference is to the fact that an astonishing 137 runs had been scored in India’s first innings with just a single wicket lost. Azhar was referring to himself as well as his captain Imran Khan. That day they had faced up to a critical moment with a lot on the line. Pakistan needed only one more wicket to win and India needed four more wickets to make it hard for Pakistan. In the final over, the Pakistani team used everything they had to knock off those four wickets.

They had no batting left with their all-out fielders on the field. Then came a moment that would go down in cricket history: Pakistani fast bowler Aaqib Javed bowled a full toss, which was caught by a diving Mohammad Azharuddin at mid-off. The ball flew off his bat and hit the stumps, knocking it down and allowing Pakistan to win by one run! There was so much pressure on India not to let Pakistan get over that line and pull off an unlikely victory.

Just as there was so much pressure on Aaqib Javed to give them that victory. And he just couldn’t do it. He tried it by bowling full and straight and might have got rid of some of those runs but it didn’t quite come off and then he bowled one that skidded on and turned away from him completely and went straight into Azharuddin’s gloves! The crowd erupted in joy as they knew Pakistan had won by one run! Azharuddin would later say: “Aaqib bowled like a champion…he bowled like an artist!” He also added: “We were five down with only two overs left… we knew we needed four wickets… we knew we needed Aaqib to bowl like an artist, like a champion - like him!” This quote has become an important part of our culture and will live on for years even decades after it was originally said more than 20 years ago.

The fans still love it today despite its appearance in an ancient game of cricket between two nations where there were no microphones or television cameras in play at the time, but
